Imagine a whole day & night dedicated to spiritual silence, a time faithfully honoured by the Balinese Hindus. This upcoming 11th of March, at Batu Karang Lembongan Resort & Spa, The Deck Cafe & Bar, The Howff Whisky, Gin, & Wine Bar & Muntigs Bar & Restaurant, we will be celebrating Bali’s “Nyepi,” or Day of Silence, falling on the Balinese Lunar New Year.
The Balinese New Year is a day of absolute silence throughout the islands. For Hindu Balinese, the day is an opportunity to engage in fasting, meditation and self-introspection. The holiday is observed as a day of absolute stillness where there is no traffic on the roads, all outlets and offices are closed and all lights are switched off throughout the night. The streets will be closed to both pedestrians and vehicles. The Domestic and International airport as well as the harbor will be also closed. It is of the belief that any light will attract the evil spirits.
One day before Nyepi Day, a ceremony is held to welcome “Nyepi”, called “Tawur Agung”, the great sacrificial ceremony. The ceremony is known for the parade of “Ogoh-Ogoh” festivals, giant figures of monsters during “Pengerupukan” ceremony aimed at appeasing the evil spirits who descend to earth on this particular night disturbing the stability of peace. The purpose of this ceremonial procession is to make any conceivable noise to seek endowment to frighten away demons and evil spirits from the Island of Bali.
The highlight of the celebration falls on Nyepi Day, the 11th of March. Observance starts at 06.00 am or at sunrise and ends at 6.00 am on the 12th of March. The prohibitions are taken very seriously by the Hindu population in Bali. The family of Batu Karang Lembongan respectfully asks that noise be kept to a minimum and respect be shown to the local traditions of this peaceful day. During this time as no movement is permitted throughout the island, access both entering and exiting the resort will be closed. The Deck Cafe & Bar & The Howff Whisky, Gin, & Wine Bar will be closed, and Muntigs Bar & Restaurant only open for in-house guests for breakfast and lunch.
